The Genie City

Door three

The Film

A boy finds his way into the Genie world. He forgets it. Then, a lifetime later, he remembers.

The spectacle is free: a city one degree left on the quantum axis, faces that change colour, a cube of five spirals on a mountain you cannot climb by trying harder. But the film is not about the city. It is about forgetting something true, and the long way back to it.

The spine

Everybody in the audience has already lived the first half.

Children can see the Genies. This is not a plot device in the world of the book, it is simply how the world works, and it comes with a cost that the book states plainly: because of the unavoidable pressure to fit in, children growing up slowly begin to forget the world they once belonged to. When they become adults they teach their own children that what they saw was imaginary.

So the film has its shape built into its premise. The boy forgets. Not through villainy and not through a mistake, but through the exact process every person in the cinema has already completed. And then, as a grown man, he remembers.

That is the ending, and it is the reason the story is worth telling. Not a return to childhood, which is not on offer to anybody, but a return to innocence carrying everything the intervening years taught him. The Genies ask adults a question that sounds like a joke and is not: what is real in this world? The boy is the one character who ends up in a position to answer it.

The Genies do not have a word for adult. They use it only for someone who thinks and feels old in their mind, is boring to be around, and behaves too seriously to be played with. There is a legend among them about the only Genie who ever grew up.

The comedy is not a coating on this. It is the same material. A trick that empties a man's head at a doorway is funny, and it is also the mechanism by which somebody who has waited a long time finally gets to speak. That doubleness is the film's whole tonal opportunity, and it is why the surface can stay light while the ending does not have to be.

What the world gives a production

A visual language that already exists

Hand-drawn, unrepeatable character design, made on paper for this world and nowhere else. Not a style anybody can accidentally arrive at.

A rule set, not a mood

Genies cannot touch our world. Everything supernatural must arrive through the subconscious. That single constraint generates scenes rather than requiring them.

Locations built for the camera

The Mixer. The purple corridor. An inverted world where the ground becomes the sky and you step upward without falling. A cube of spirals entered by changing perspective.

An emotional floor

The boy's real life, in a real place, with real people. The strangeness only works because it is anchored to something ordinary.

Current stage

Concept and treatment. Rights undivided, and deliberately unhurried.

Live action, animation and hybrid are all open. Conversations are welcome with producers and animation studios who want to shape the treatment rather than receive one. Nothing has been optioned.

You have just been made to forget that you were wearing your glasses. Nothing was taken, and the Genie has now had enough fun. Book One — Genies' Skills and Abilities
